The fact is....in the 1950's....iodine was added to a lot of food....especially bread. In the late 50's, they decided to take iodine out and replace it with Bromine. Bromine, Bromide, Flourine, Flouride, Chlorine, Chloride are all chemicals that actually destroy iodine. So, just when you thought you were covered, you realized that we are getting nearly zippo amounts of iodine.
Estimates are that one in three women over the age of 40 are suffering from subclinical hypothyroidism. Iodine is incredibly important when it comes to the production of hormones in the body. Iodine has many functions...some of them are:
1. Triggers apoptosis (programmed death of cells) in normal and abnormal cells (cancer cells)
2. It is the main surveillance system for abnormal cells in the body
3. Detoxifies chemicals
4. Reacts with tyrosine and histadine to inactivate enzymes and denature protein.
5. Used to make thyroid hormones
6. Antiseptic to bacteria, algae, fungi, viruses adn protozoa.
7. Detoxifies bilogical toxins, food poison and snake venoms.
Are you low? here is an easy test~ Go to the drugstore and buy some iodine. This is a little bottle that your mom used to keep in the medicine cabinet. Paint a square on your forearm...about 2inches by 2 inches. Then...watch it. Do it first thing in the morning and every 1/2 hour take a look at it. It should stay there a good 24 hours. If it absorbs before then....you are low and need some iodine. If you are low....call the office and tell them you need to come in and see Dr. Weir!
